  2. Controlling Pests Naturally

    Clyde Stephens is a fifth-generation Floridian and got a degree in Entomology from the University of Florida. He spent his career in banana research for the United Fruit Company, now Chiquita, and was assigned to many parts of the world where bananas are grown. His specialty is the banana plantation ecosystem and demonstrating how to control pests without pesticides. This universal approach to controlling pests can be applied in Florida and anywhere there are insect problems. Stephens will share how to use natural methods to control the pests in your home and business along with a smattering of good stories about his life adventures. Retired with his wife—Phyllis —in Tavares. They also enjoy a fully solar-powered home on an island in Panama where they promote the wonders of nature.  He gives lectures in Spanish and English and is known for his Birds of Panama lecture.

    Marlon Riggs' Emmy-winning documentary Ethnic Notions (1987) takes viewers on a disturbing voyage through American history, tracing for the first time the deep-rooted stereotypes which have fueled anti-black prejudice. Through these images we can begin to understand the evolution of racial consciousness in America. Dehumanizing caricatures permeated popular culture from the 1820s to the Civil Rights period and implanted themselves deep in the American psyche. Narration by Esther Rolle and commentary by respected scholars shed light on the origins and devastating consequences of this 150 yearlong parade of bigotry.

    "Where is the flash? What about the batteries? What do these buttons do? Can my shots be edited on the camera? How do I focus my shots?" This class will answer these basic questions.
